The Meat Corporation of Namibia has warned cattle producers of a significant drop in meat prices. In its latest industry newsletter, the corporation notes that due to the situation at the Okapuka Feedlot outside Windhoek, it cautions producers of a significant price drop over the next two weeks. It says should the feedlot remain closed in the coming two weeks, the situation warrants a producer price drop of between five and eight dollars. The warning follows the closure of the Okapuka Feedlot by the Directorate of Veterinary Services, DVS, on the second of September. The DVS said the indefinite closure was in the interest of public health and to protect the meat industry. The closure came after some cattle at the feedlot tested positive twice for Zeranol in a period of one year. Despite its positive effect on the growth of animals, the naturally found Zeranol, has negative effects on the health of humans. These include the development of breast cancer, infertility, prostate cancer and hormonal imbalances when the meat is consumed.
