Namibia appreciates the role UNESCO plays in the implementation of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the country. Higher Education, Training and Innovation Minister Itah Kandjii-Murangi says Namibia is an active and proud participant in UNESCO programmes. Kandjii-Murangi presented Namibia’s National Statement at the 39th General Conference of UNESCO, currently underway at its headquarters in the French capital city, Paris. She said priority areas of technical and vocational education and training (TVET), quality education, teacher development, education for sustainable development and global citizenship education are important enablers for advancing the fourth development goal. SDG 4 aims to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education. Kandjii-Murangi said TVET is an effective vehicle for equipping the youth with requisite skills for employment and entrepreneurship while it is considered a catalyst for economic growth and a strategy to curb youth unemployment. As part of government’s Harambee prosperity plan, TVET transformation and expansion is given prominence to accelerate skills development and augment tertiary graduate employability. The Higher education minister says as part of that transformation, government is establishing a faculty for TVET instructors training at one of Namibia’s universities. Kandjii-Murangi said more TVET institutions are being established in several regions of Namibia as part of the envisaged expansion. She also reveals that work is at an advanced stage to make job attachment a compulsory component of TVET education.
