Residents of the Mix settlement in the Windhoek Rural Constituency say they live in fear of attacks by the Struggle Kids, who have been harassing them. They are thus calling for immediate police protection and compensation for damaged property by the group at the settlement. The latest incident happened on Tuesday when the group was reported to have attacked shebeens, damaging property and destroying alcohol bottles. The residents reported that the struggle Kids descended on shebeens with pangas and knifes, harassing everyone they found and demanding closure. A single mother of three, Hilma Shooya, says a group of six of Struggle Kids entered her shebeen, destroyed alcohol bottles and damaged her generator which provides lighting and power to the fridge and juke box. Shooya makes a living by operating a shebeen and selling meat to the community around her, citing that a broken generator was a loss of income. She says she now fears for her life and that of her children as the Struggle Kids threaten to return and burn her shebeen. Another resident, Fillipus Vaino, says the group destroyed his solar panel, living his household in the dark. Earlier, the Struggle Kids confiscated drought relief food rations from the Mix residents, including the elderly.
