Residents of central Mondesa are demanding compensation from the Swakopmund Municipality after a broken municipal water pipe flooded their homes. The residents, who were affected are from Omugulugwombashe, Obie and Erica Tsuses streets of Mondesa. Last week, they told NBC News that a pipe transporting water to their homes burst and water gushed into the streets and yards, leaving the majority of makeshift homes covered in water. Resident Pawapeni Wanifeni says flooding of informal homes has become costly as their furniture and electrical appliances get damaged every time a water pipe burst. Keshi Frans says she is tired of replacing furniture and electrical appliances that are damaged by water. A group of municipality cleaners visited the affected homes and cleared the water. But the residents say they want financial compensation for losses caused by the water. The residents are further worried that the municipality will add the cost of the wasted water to their individual bills. They have urged the Swakopmund Municipality to find a permanent solution for the problem. The municipality has yet to respond to questions NBC News sent it last week about the residents’ complaints.
