The National Assembly has adopted government’s Social Media Use Policy and Communication Plan. These frameworks provide a guideline for information dissemination to the public. The guidelines are meant for public relations, media liaison, and information officers, who can now also use social media to perform their work. Tabling the Social Media Use Policy and the Communication Plan for 2016 to 2020, Information and Communication Technology Minister, Tjekero Tweya said the policy provided guidance in the use of social media within the government communication environment. It aims to improve government transparency, participation and interaction with the public. The policy however also provides guidelines on caution, for government employees using social media for private communication purposes, stressing that employees are representatives of their offices and should be careful about any content they post on social media platforms. Tweya says the Communication Plan will speed up communication and enhance the way government and its agencies, including Regional and Local Authority Councils, manage and share information with the public. Under the social media policy, local government is also required to establish social media platforms and web points of contact.
