The Namibia Cuba Friendship Association (NAMCUFA) has condemned the United States’ decision to add Cuba back to the list of countries alleged to sponsor terrorism.

The Secretary General of NAMCUFA, Cecilia Muzile, stated that the association will continue to demand the removal of Cuba from the list, following its reinstatement by President Donald Trump’s administration.

“Before the reinstatement of Cuba on the so-called list a few days ago, the Biden administration announced its removal, and we welcomed it because it’s what we have been calling for. However, we were a bit skeptical about why it had to be done at the last moment, just days before he left office. In our letter, we expressed our support for this decision and urged the incoming administration to uphold it. But we were not surprised by the reinstatement, given Trump’s character. So yes, it was disappointing to see Cuba put back on the so-called terrorist list, and we will continue to demand its removal.”

The more than 60-year-old U.S. economic blockade against Cuba remains in place, severely impacting the country’s economic performance.

“The people of Cuba are suffering under this blockade; as we said, it has been over 60 years. Imagine living under such conditions for so long—it truly has a negative impact. Nevertheless, the Cuban people are resilient; they persevere in every aspect of life. If we consider their education, it is still among the best, and their health system, despite the challenges, continues to provide aid to other nations.”

Muzile emphasized that Namibia’s friendship with Cuba stems from the years of Namibia’s liberation struggle when the Cuban government provided vital assistance to the Namibian people.

“The Cuban people fought side by side with us. We cannot discuss Namibia’s independence without acknowledging Cuba, which is why we cherish the solidarity and friendship of our brothers and sisters in Cuba. They stood by us when we needed assistance the most; therefore, we are also calling on Namibians to support Cuba during this time.”

Muzile also urges the U.S. to adhere to international resolutions from the United Nations that call for an end to the economic blockade against Cuba.
