Namibia marked International Human Rights Day in Windhoek Tuesday. The event, which was held at the Old Location Cemetery in Pioneers Park, was jointly commemorated with the 60th anniversary of the Namibian Women’s Day under the theme ‘Orange the World: Generation Equality Stands Against Rape’. At the event, Vice-President Nangolo Mbumba pledged the Namibian Government’s resolve to address issues of gender-based violence through various existing legal instruments. Mbumba, however, noted that Government will soon bring necessary amendments to the GBV Act in order to address contemporary challenges facing women and children. On her part, UN Resident Coordinator in Namibia, Rachel Odede appealed to Namibia to make data on GBV available in order to determine the magnitude of the problem and find solutions for them. While expressing concern at the scourge of violence against women and children in the country, Odede said respect for human rights is essential for the development of Namibia and it’s people. During the commemoration, Mbumba and Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila laid wreaths at the grave of heroes and heroines buried at the cemetery.
