The Namibia Strategic Framework on HIV has set a target of reaching out to 95 per cent of people living with HIV through anti-retro-viral treatment, ART. The Health and Social Services Deputy Minister, Juliet Kavetuna, made the statement at the orientation of new healthcare workers. They were hired under the United States Agency for International Development HIV Clinical Services Technical Assistance Project, UTAP. UTAP was initiated in Namibia in February 2015 and its implementation is to ensure that all people needing life-saving treatment receive it. Kavetuna told Nampa that it was encouraging to see that UTAP supported target districts in the regions that had a high burden of HIV and a huge need for ART. UTAP is to deploy the new healthcare workers to Andara and Nyangana in the Kavango East Region. It will also deploy them to Odibo in Ohangwena, Oshikuku in Omusati, Onandjokwe, Omuthiya and Tsumeb in Oshikoto and Grootfontein in the Otjozondjupa Region. The responsibilities will be to accelerate and decentralise the HIV response; efforts to contribute to Namibia’s race towards achieving HIV epidemic control.
