NamPower wishes to warn residents downstream of Ruacana Hydropower Station to be on high flood alert. Following recent heavy rains in the areas of the Kunene river, upstream of Ruacana Hydropower Station, a flash flood reached Ruacana Hydropower Station on Wednesday, resulting in sudden flooding of the areas downstream of the power station. The Namibian Police and NamPower are currently attending to villages that have been affected by the sudden increase of the river flow and will continue to work with the Omusati and Kunene Regional Councils and Angolan authorities to alert the communities and to ensure the prevention of loss of life or property. The public, especially those residing along the Kunene River, downstream of Ruacana Hydropower Station, are further advised to stay alert of the warning siren that sounds when the dam gates at Ruacana Hydropower Station are operated and to obtain river flow information by contacting the following numbers: 065 271 4112 or 065 271 4113.
