Delegates to the Swapo Party 6th Extraordinary Congress have elected Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah as the party president, following the death of Dr. Hage Geingob last year, leaving the position vacant.

Dr. Nandi-Ndaitwah’s election marks a significant moment in the party’s history as the first female president of the party, a day that coincides with International Women’s Day.

This, she says, speaks to the resilience of democracy, strengthening diversity and fulfilling the dreams of countless women and men who have fought for equality, justice, and the opportunity for all voices to be heard, particularly in the context of social and economic development.

Nandi-Ndaitwah expressed profound gratitude for the support and trust placed in her.

“I take this trust with all my heart, and I call upon all of you, the leadership of Swapo Party and rank in file to join me as we build the party into a formidable party that will meet the aspiration of our members and course all Namibians. By virtue of having elected me, you have also accepted the challenges of selflessness, devoting yourselves to the betterment of our party through unity purpose and service delivery to all our members and all the people of Namibia.”

She emphasised the importance of unity within the party, urging members to continue to sacrifice for the betterment of both the party and the nation.

She further noted that the deaths of the two late party presidents, Sam Nujoma and Hage Geingob, should inspire members to move in unison, renewing their sense of dedication and urgency to strengthen the party.

This, Nandi-Ndaitwah added, would serve as a fitting honour and lasting tribute to them and to those who sacrificed for the entire country.

Nandi-Ndaitwah took the party’s oath, pledging to serve and work tirelessly for the betterment of the party.

As part of the process, she was also presented with the instruments of power, symbolising the trust and responsibility bestowed upon her.

She urged the party to maintain a clear vision and develop a positive attitude for the well-being of the Namibian people.
