The National Assembly has ratified an international agreement that seeks to enhance worldwide access to solar energy technology and boost research. Minister of Environment and Tourism, Pohamba Shifeta, in motivating the Paris Declaration on the International Solar Alliance (PDISA) told the House that the agreement enables Namibia to access funding as one of the countries with plenty of sunshine. Shifeta said the country supports the alliance initiative and it has scaled up solar power use in agriculture and is exploring attractive rates for Green Schemes to benefit from solar projects funding. The minister stressed that the PDISA complements Namibia’s energy plans, and the country’s recent adoption of the Energy Policy has brought it a step closer to reaching its energy goals. The PDISA advocates for and assists countries in accessing technology cost effectively, while boosting research initiatives. It would mobilize investments worth N$13 trillion in the next 12-years to deploy solar energy technology world-wide. The PDISA agreement was signed during the Climate Change Conference held in France three-years ago. Namibia’s endorsement of the PDISA means that it has become one of 23 countries that have ratified the agreement, which has been signed by 51 countries.
