Residents of Kavango West’s Ncuncuni Constituency, who are without national identity documents, are frustrated and want answers on their status. The majority of them are immigrants from Angola but have lived in the area most of their lives. The children, like 27-year-old Thereza Tchivia, were issued non-Namibia birth certificates. Tchivia says she and her five siblings are denied opportunities as they are viewed as Angolans even though they have no connection to that country. Kolorinda Maliti has lived in Namibia for decades, is married to a Namibian man, with children, but her status and that of her children remain unclear. Maliti’s situation is similar to pensioner Katalina Ndala who is forced to sell wild fruits under a tree along the Trans-Zambezi Highway at Mile 20. Ndala does not remember when she arrived in Namibia, except that it was before independence. The villagers are registered voters and want the candidates they vote for on Wednesday to take the issues of national identity documents seriously. They also want a market shelter at Mile 20 as their goods are drenched whenever it rains.
