The Otjozondjupa Region faces a critical shortage of labour inspectors. The Okakarara Constituency is one of those severely affected by the lack of labour inspectors, as there are no inspectors attached to the constituency. Nampa has learnt that there are only three labour inspectors from the Ministry of Labour, Industrial Relations and Employment Creation for the entire Otjozondjupa Region, all of whom are based at Otjiwarongo. The lack of labour inspectors has forced councillors of the Okakarara Constituency in the Otjozondjupa Region to fill in. Councillor Vetaruhe Kandorozu told Nampa that workers were flocking to their offices with complaints. He said employers took advantage of the absence of labour inspectors who only reside at Otjiwarongo, 100 kilometres from Okakarara. Permanent Secretary in the Labour, Industrial Relations and Employment Creation Ministry, Bro-Mathew Shinguadja, confirmed the absence of a labour inspector at Okakarara. He said the lack of accommodation and office space in the constituency was to blame. Shinguadja advised workers to approach the ministry’s head office or regional offices when they encountered unfair labour practices.
