The mayor of Omaruru has warned residents that development comes with extra financial responsibility. Mayor Hendrina Gebhardt addressed the community of Hakahana settlement at Mabokke Stadium over the weekend, saying the infrastructure they have been demanding, is available, but not for free. Gebhardt told erven owners to pay off of their land, or make lease agreements. According to proposed tariffs that will come into effect in July, serviced low income residential land will cost N$40 per square meter to buy, and N$250 per month to lease. The mayor said residents will have to pay a once-off connection fee of N$501, and then be prepared to pay as they use the electricity. Mayor Gebhardt pointed out that installing a prepaid water meter costs N$2 700, while monthly basic charges are N$45. Refuse removal is set at N$89, and the re-connection fee after disconnection, is N$173. The mayor says the formalisation of Hakahana settlement will bring better protection for school learners, as new shebeens will have to ask their neighbours for permission before a fitness certificate is issued, for them to operate.
