Five schools in Onkumbula Education Circuit of the Oshikoto region have been without water since Monday. The affected schools are Onkumbula, Elambo, Onamishu, Evale Combined School and Sheefeni Primary School. It is reported that taps ran dry last Thursday and people have been using water from tanks, which are now empty. This has prompted learners and teachers to fetch water from wells and boreholes, although it is not fit for human consumption. Some learners are suffering from diarrhoea, allegedly caused by unhygienic water. A source told NBC News that if the situation was not rectified soon, learners could be sent home at a time when they were busy writing examinations. The problem was reported to the rural water supplier and Namwater, who are allegedly shifting the blame between them.
