The Outgoing Executive Director of the Namibian National Farmers Union (NNFU) has described his 10-year tenure at the helm of the union as having been a success. In an interview with NBC News Mwilima Mushokobanji says a lot has been achieved in the transformation of the agriculture sector. Mushojobanji noted under his leadership, the NNFU fought for market access for livestock farmers in the Northern Communal Areas (NCA) until the procurement law provided for government institutions to source meat from producers in the area. In the process, a new group of young agripreneurs started emerging in the NCA while the quality of livestock also improving. He further expressed happiness with the re-opening of the Oshakati abattoir as well as the Rundu abattoir, that will re-open soon, and the planned establishment of a meat processing plant at Bukalo in the Zambezi. Mushokobanji stressed that what is left now is to put up animal feed production scheme and feedlots in the NCA. He added that, as NNFU leader, helped to build good cooperation with the government and called for this relationship to be nurtured further. The outgoing leader further maintained that he has helped the NNFU to become a member of the Southern African Confederation of Agricultural Union. Market diversification, setting up a business arm for the NNFU to ensure financial independence and advocate for adequate food production to feed the growing population, are the issues what the new leadership should focus on. Mushokobanji has recently been appointed the chief executive officer (CEO) of Meatco and is due to start next Monday.
