Residents of Windhoek’s Havana informal settlement say the City of Windhoek has ignored their pleas since 2018, to relocate a skip container that is not emptied regularly. They say garbage is dumped in front of their houses as the skip container regularly overflows, leaving the area in an undesirable state. Terry !Nanub, whose house is much further away from the overflowing skip container, says he is finding garbage dumped right in front of his front door. Others in the neighbourhood are similarly affected, and worry over possible contraction of diseases. Anna-Marrie Klaasen, who lives in the same house as !Nanub, says she is angry with the City of Windhoek for ignoring residents’ pleas to have the skip container relocated. The City of Windhoek’s Communication and Marketing Manager has told NBC News in reply that delays in emptying the skip containers have been experienced since a front loader the municipality has been using to empty the containers malfunctioned. The City’s Herold Akwenye says it has been sent in for repairs, which would finnish around 15 January. He said normal operations related to emptying of the skip containers in Havana informal settlement will resume, soon after it is repaired.
