All persons who have tested HIV positive are implored to enroll for ARV treatment soonest, to suppress the disease and prevent new infections. The public health facilities have recorded 42 000 patients, who have not enrolled for treatment since detection. That number was detected three years ago when the Ministry of Health and Social Services introduced the Test and Treat Strategy, putting all patients, irrespective of their CD4 counts, on ARV treatment. In an interview with NBC News, Health Deputy Minister Juliet Kavetuna said reasons for staying away could be associated with stigma, denial of status, misconception, side effects of the treatment and social factors. Long distances to health facilities patients must travel could be another factor. Kavetuna said, however, that the ministry was working hard to make sure that ARV treatment became one of the medications that could be initiated by a registered nurse at a health facility to make it easy for people to have easy access to them. At the moment, this is only done by the doctors. The ministry however, continue to make strides in the Prevention from Mother-to-Child Transmission with 96% coverage at the moment.
