The government has urged people to be patient, as plans are being reviewed for easing the current high prevalence of human-wildlife conflict. The Deputy-Minister of Environment and Tourism, Tommy Nambahu, is travelling with Vice-President Nickey Iyambo’s delegation, in the Kavango East and West regions. They visited Green Scheme irrigation projects, where communities in both regions, complained about large groups of elephants, terrorising villagers. The communities say the animals damage crops in the villages surrounding the irrigation schemes. Deputy minister Nambahu responded that his ministry was taking these issues seriously, and that plans were underway to solve the problem. Among the plans, is the possibility of having a fully-fledged, self-reliant insurance scheme, that will cover lives lost and injuries sustained, as well as crop losses faced by farmers as a result of attacks by wildlife. The Vice-President will address the communities of both the Kavango East and West Tuesday, and will address the people in Rundu, before his departure.
