Namibian Police in the Kunene Region arrested four suspected poachers near Khorixas. The arrest of the four men, including their driver, was confirmed by the regional crime investigation coordinator, Deputy Commissioner Rudolf Kanyetu. Kanyetu said three men were nabbed after having walked into a police roadblock about forty kilometres outside Khorixas. He said the three men were on Friday night seen carrying rifles in the area where there are large herds of elephants and rhino. Between 02h00 and 04h00 Saturday, the men were stopped at the roadblock manned by Namibian Police Officers and officials from the Ministry of Environment and Tourism. However, during the interrogation, the suspected poachers ran away and a shootout erupted. Kanyetu said no one was injured but the three men were successfully apprehended. The fourth suspect – the driver- was arrested later the same day. They are now under investigation for suspected poaching, and will probably be linked to other poaching cases in the area. They are expected to appear before the town’s magistrate this week. Environment and Tourism public relations officer, Romeo Muyunda said the ministry will also be looking into the case. Muyunda commended the public for alerting the police to suspicious poaching and criminal activities in the area.
