Namibian President Hage Geingob met with his Botswana counterpart, Mokweetsi Masisi this morning. Dr Geingob called on the Namibian refugees in that country to return home as there is no danger facing them in Namibia. The approximately 800 Namibians are part of a larger group that fled from their home country into Botswana following a failed attempt to secede the Zambezi Region, then Caprivi, from the rest of Namibia in August 1999. In 2015, their refugee status was revoked and the Botswana government has been attempting to repatriate them since then. Dr. Geingob assured the Namibians that it was safe for them to return home, and that international organisations would monitor their safety. On his part, Dr Masisi assured his Namibian counterpart of his government’s commitment in assisting to get the Namibians home safely. The Namibian president, who is the current SADC Chairperson, then proceeded to the SADC Headquarters where he addressed staff of the regional bloc. The group of refugees planned a demonstration at the SADC headquarters, but this was turned down by the Batswana authorities as Dr Geingob is in that country as a guest of SADC.
