Minister of Youth, National Service, Sport and Culture, Jerry Ekandjo has been relieved of his duties on Thursday, just like Home Affairs Minister, Pendukeni Iivula-Ithana. In an almost identical letter to that of Iivula-Ithana, dated 1 February 2018, President Hage Geingob states, “by virtue of the powers vested in me by Article 32(6) of the Constitution of the Republic of Namibia, I have decided to relieve you of your duties as Minister of Home Affairs and Immigration with immediate effect.” [sic] President Geingob further says the termination of his appointment should not be interpreted as a blight on the “immense personal sacrifices, as well as the immeasurable contribution you have made in the interest of the Republic of Namibia. Like Ivula-Iithana, Ekandjo was part of the unsuccessful Team Swapo slate that stood against Geingob’s Team Harambee for the party’s top four positions at the November congress.
