Today is International Women’s Day, celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. In a statement, President Hage Geingob reiterated Namibia’s commitment to gender equality through targeted actions, such as sound legal and policy frameworks. Dr Geingob stated that Namibia commits itself to accelerate gender equality and address the scourge of gender based violence through appropriate policies and interventions. The day, the President says, should serve as a reminder that more should be done at a legal and policy level to ensure equal participation of women in all activities. The theme for this year is “I am Generation Equality: Realizing Women’s Rights. The theme is aligned with UN Women’s new multigenerational campaign, The President says, Namibians should ensure the participation of women in all layers of governance and economic activity as a symbol of freedom and equality in society. He added that Namibia has since independent made significant progress in advancing gender equality.
