President Hage Geingob has praised Javier Perez de Cuellar for his visionary leadership in directing the affairs of the United Nations-Transitional Assistance Group (UNTAG). The group oversaw Namibia’s transition to a democratic state following the 1989 elections. President Geingob, in a statement, said Cuellar’s understanding of Namibia’s struggle for freedom and unique insights on difficult issues was key in laying the foundation for elections and transition to 21 March 1990. The Namibian leader expressed his condolences to the family, friends and the entire UN-family during this period.
