Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila has reiterated the Namibian government’s stance on the current teachers’ strike, regarding interim measures at schools. Speaking in the National Assembly, Kuugongelwa-Amadhila said parents and guardians of learners in Government schools are advised to keep their children at home on Thursday and Friday. Grade 12 Mathematics and Entrepreneurship as well as Grade 10 Integrated Performing Arts Paper 1 and Life Science have been postponed until further notice for both Government and private schools. All examinations for the remaining subjects will proceed as scheduled from Monday. Teachers and other Education staff as well as staff members in non-teaching job categories who have opted not to strike, will continue with their normal duties without disruption or intimidation. The Prime Minister notes that the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture has issued a communication to all stakeholders in the education sector on these measures. She says the Government regrets the disruption and discomfort the prevailing situation has caused, especially on the learners that are writing examinations. Kuugongelwa-Amadhila says the Government is committed to having the matter resolved as soon as possible and that the outcome of the engagement with the concerned trade union stakeholders will be communicated once a conclusion is reached. The Premier has extended the Government’s appreciation to all staff members who decided to put the interest of the learners before their own by reporting for duty on Thursday.
