The Namibia Transport and Taxi Union (NTTU) has called off the demonstration of public transport operators, which started on Tuesday. The NTTU President, Werner Januarie, confirmed that the union resolved some of its grievances during a close-door meeting with Works and Transport Deputy Minister James Sankwasa on Tuesday. Januarie told Nampa that the protest will not proceed as various stakeholders within the public transport sector are expected to discuss the concerns in a follow-up meeting on Monday. Public transport operators on Tuesday had a demonstration to appeal to Government to address their grievances. These include allegations of abuse, harassment and high traffic fines by authorities. Issues to be discussed during Monday’s meeting include the adoption of regulations outlining the role and responsibilities of trade unions as well as associations representing employees and employers. Januarie urged the Labour, Industrial Relations and Employment-Creation Ministry to recognise public transport operators as employees by resolving strict targets set by taxi owners.
