The outbreak of Newcastle Disease in the northern communal area is still confined to Omusati, Oshana, Ohangwena and Oshikoto regions. The Agriculture, Water and Forestry Ministry says in a statement, that no new cases have been recorded outside these regions. It says more than 4 000 chickens have died from the disease since its outbreak four-months ago. Control measures in the affected regions are still in place and include a ban on the movement and trading of live birds such as chickens, ducks, ostriches, guinea fowl, caged birds and pigeons. A ban on the hatching of eggs from other countries or regions south of the Veterinary Cordon Fence in the affected regions is still in place. The ministry says all import permits issued prior to these bans, are withdrawn. It further stresses that inspections at road blocks within the Northern Communal Areas and regular patrols along borders will be conducted and trespassers will be prosecuted. The Ministry has requested all chicken farmers to visit their nearest state veterinary office for Newcastle Disease vaccine. It further urges farmers to report any suspected cases of Newcastle Disease to veterinary offices or any agricultural office, headmen or regional Councillors.
