The Rundu Town Councillors defied the directive by the Swapo Party Secretary General, Sophia Shaningwa, who wanted the status quo kept. The councillors voted for a new Mayor and Deputy Mayor against the wish of the party. The All People’s Party (APP) Councillor Fausitinus Wakudumo was the kingmaker when he seconded Toini Hausiku’s nomination of Isak Kandungu for mayor. Wakudumo then nominated Hausiku for deputy mayor after former mayor Verna Sinimbo declined nomination to that position. Magistrate Sonia Sampofu had to adjourn the process for consultation, after Sinimbo’s nomination for mayor was not seconded. Hausiku becomes the deputy mayor, a position which was previously held by Ralph Ihemba. Anastasia Antonio was re-elected chairperson of the management committee, while Faustinus Wakudumo of the APP will form part of the management committee. The third slot in the management committee could not be filled as the remaining councilors declined nomination. The family and supporters of the former mayor who wanted the Swapo Party directive observed, staged a walkout of the council chambers before the new mayor gave his acceptance speech. Isak Kandingu called for unity in his acceptance speech. The councillors could be recalled by the Swapo Party for defying the Secretary General’s directive.
