SADC has condemned the killing of eight UN peacekeepers in Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC) north-eastern city, Beni. The peacekeepers, who were killed in a clash with militias on Thursday, belongs to SADC member states, Malawi and Tanzania. Twelve of DRC’s Defence Force members were also killed during the fight. Briefing African Union’s (AU) extraordinary summit in Addis Ababa, SADC Chairperson, Hage Geingob described the killings as barbaric. President Geingob said the peacekeepers’ mission is to bring about peace and stability to DRC and the region also condemned the killing of innocent civilians.
