Close to 200 fishermen were left stranded in Walvis Bay as the two vessels they work for have left Namibian waters without informing them. The vessels, Geysir and Saga, belong to Samherji, the Icelandic company embroiled in the Fishrot scandal where prominent Namibians, including two former ministers, are accused of receiving bribes from the company for fishing rights. The vessels, it’s alleged, haven’t been contracted to catch fish due to a halt in the allocation of quotas. Geysir left on Sunday, whilst Saga left last Wednesday.
