Senegal is looking for Namibia’s endorsement of its candidate for the position of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission. In this regard, the west African country’s special envoy, Abdoul Aziz Tall, delivered a message to President Hage Geingob on Friday. Senegal is the latest country seeking endorsement from Namibia for politician, Abdoulaye Bathily, despite Namibia rallying behind SADC candidate, Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi, who is Botswana’s Foreign Affairs Minister. Election for the most powerful position is scheduled to take place during next month’s summit as candidates failed to secure two-thirds majority five-months ago. President Geingob says the country is committed to support the SADC regional candidate, but remains open to endorsing other candidates should Venson-Moitoi not make it. Other candidates contesting to replace outgoing chairperson, Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, are Moussa Faki Mahamat of Chad, Mba Mokuy of Equatorial Guinea and Dr Amina Mohamed of Kenya. Namibia is the last stop for the Senegalese special envoy, having been to neighbouring Angola for intense lobbying.
