Business for sex workers operating from Katutura has seen a dramatic downturn since the COVID-19 lockdown was announced. The women and men who mainly stand at the spot popularly known as Damara Bus Stop, in Shanghai Street, say they earn around N$50 for a single-sex act. We managed to speak to a 31-year-old woman who works at this bus stop and for her protection, we will not disclose her face and only refer to her as X. She said there are about 15 men and women from this neighbourhood who come out daily to do sex work. Even though her safety is not assured at times, she doesn’t have any other option than to walk the streets. X noted that she only does this to generate an income as she has two children who have to eat. She explained that as a child she too had dreams of becoming a medical doctor but as life would have it, she finds herself in this situation and is disappointed in herself. On why she doesn’t look for other work to do, she said that she would do other odd jobs such as cleaning and doing nails but now she had to resort to sex work. X indicated that she was once raped at the age of 10 by a family member and from there onwards, her whole life was affected. At this point, X could not hold back her tears as recalled that tragic moment in her childhood. She also pleaded with Namibian people not to judge sex workers without finding out their complete story.
