Almost 50 employees at Dinapama clothes and textile manufacturing company face retrenchment.. Most of them belong to the Namibia Manufacturing and Retail Workers Union, which is now embroiled in a fight with the management of Dinapama. The workers say they are being victimized because they demanded their rightful annual salary increments. They accuse the management of Dinapama of unfair labour practices and intimidation. Victor Hamunyela, who is also in the union, claims their leave days are withdrawn unilaterally, and they are monitored on the time they spend in toilets, being unproductive: Managing Director of Dinapama Manufacturing, David Namalenga, says it’s just because of global financial difficulties that he is retrenching staff. They received a salary hike of 24% last year, and 10% the year before, but Namalenga says it is the indiscipline of workers that force even big retail firms such as Ramatex, to close down. The average employee at Dinapama earns about 1 800 dollars. The retrenchments will take effect in mid-December 2017.
