Student debt at the University of Namibia now stands at 255 million dollars. This is attributed to events that took place at the beginning of 2016, where the Ministry of Higher Education instructed tertiary institutions to lower registration fees. The University is now trying all it can to convince the students to settle their debts or they will not be able to sit for examination in October. UNAM Public Relations Officer John Haufiku says 2016’s debt is significantly higher that what the University experienced before. An estimated 19 000 students still owe the University tuition fees. Haufiku is therefore urging all students, parents, guardians and sponsors to help in meeting this educational commitment.
