The Supreme Court will deliver judgment within the next two weeks in the case of eight high treason accused who say the High Court lacks jurisdiction to hear their trial. That follows another appearance by the eight treason suspects before High Court Judge Naomi Shivute on Wednesday. Judge Shivute told the accused that the Supreme Court would give a ruling in their appeal application in the next two weeks. Nampa reports that the matter was postponed to the 31st of this month for the announcement of the ruling of the Supreme Court. The postponement is in accordance with the agreement reached between the defence lawyer, Norman Tjombe and State Advocate, Anita Malherbe-Meyer. In July 2015, the Supreme Court upheld the eight men’s leave to appeal the dismissal of their application challenging the High Court’s jurisdiction and ordered a fresh trial. The eight men each face charges of high treason in connection with their alleged involvement in a failed attempt to secede the Zambezi region from Namibia on 2nd August 1999. In July 2012, the Supreme Court set aside all the convictions and sentences against the group after they successfully appealed against the convictions and sentences.
