Swanu of Namibia is claiming that the Government’s drought relief food lacks nutritional value and is not fit for human consumption. This is despite the opposition party’s failure to produce a nutritionist to back up their claims. Vice President Benjamin Limbo says they have also observed the unequal distribution of drought relief food as some communities are given quality maize meal while others, particularly in the Zambezi region, are given poorly grounded maize meal. Limbo also called on the Government to consider introducing a special feeding program to cater for people living with HIV/AIDS. But, the spokesperson in the Prime Minister’s Office, Saima Shaanika, dismissed Swanu’s claims, saying the allegations were devoid of any truth. She said the maize meal was scientifically proven and produced by reputable companies, according to government specifications. She said fish was a highly nutritious food and that the the Prime Minister did not take such statements lightly. Shaanika urged the party to refrain from confusing the nation. The Government has decided to continue with the drought relief program and will distribute food to affected communities until March 2017 at a cost of 600-million dollars.
