Former President Hifikepunye Pohamba says the life of late Herman Andimba Toivo ya Toivo inspired people across the continent and globally. Ya Toivo died on Friday, at age 92, and vigils are being held for him this week. Pohamba says he admired Ya Toivo’s character, as he was a principled man, who had humility and courage, even amidst great adversity. He praised the Ya Toivo family and President Hage Geingob for according the late icon a Heroes’ Burial, saying it is a befitting gesture. The former president recounted various interactions between himself and the late Ya Toivo in Tsumeb, where they had together, mobilised contract workers to join the Owamboland People’s Organisation, now SWAPO. Pohamba also urged family, friends and sympathizers of the late Ya Toivo to celebrate his life and not mourn him. Founding President Sam Nujoma, Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila, and Deputy Prime Minister, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah attended last night’s vigil, as well as other senior Government officials. South Africa’s President Jacob Zuma had also described the late Ya Toivo in a statement, as a man of strong principles and convictions.
