Children born to foreign nationals living in Namibia will now be eligible to receive Namibian citizenship by birth. This is if either the mother or father is a permanent resident when the child is born in Namibia. The provision is contained in the Namibian Citizenship Amendment Bill, which was tabled in the National Assembly on Tuesday. The amendment states that citizenship by birth will be accorded to persons born in Namibia after independence by parents who are not Namibian citizens. This does not include children born to parents on employment permits, study permits, visitor’s entry permits and those parents who are refugees at the time of their children’s birth. Home Affairs and Immigration Minister Pendukeni Iivula-Ithana said the amendment was necessitated by a Supreme Court ruling.
