Health extension workers will no longer have to do their work on foot as they have received a welcome donation of 200 bicycles. The Pupkewitz Foundation donated the bicycles, worth 260 000 dollars to the Health and Social Services Ministry in the capital on Friday. Deputy Minister Juliet Kavetuna said the workers are being recruited to reach out to households, especially in rural areas to make health care services more accessible. She explained that there are over 1 500 trained health extension workers in 12 twelve of the 14 regions, with 582 others on training. The ministry hopes to train at least 4 000 such workers by 2019. They are responsible for health facilities across Namibia and serving rural communities, especially in reducing maternal and child morbidity and mortality . Kavetuna noted that 800 more bicycles are needed for other health extension workers.
