Executive Director (ED) of the Ministry of Health and Social Services, Ben Nangombe called on the public to refrain from spreading fake news or wishing that there is no virus in Namibia. He said, “the virus is real and it is killing people. Such rumours undermine the work of health workers who are working around the clock to contain the situation. Nangombe further explained that people who are quarantined are not only suspected cases but also those who come into the country from hard-hit countries. The ED dismissed rumours that objects coming from China are contaminated with COVID-19. “The virus does not survive that long on the surface,” he said. Nangombe said if there are countries participating in developing a COVID-19 vaccine but Namibia will not be part of it. The Centre for Disease Control in Namibia’s (CDC) director, Eric Dziuban said there is no evidence that drinking hot stuff, consuming lemon, garlic and alcohol will help fight the virus. He, however, said using sanitisers with alcohol on your hands will help control the spread. Dziuban said there is no vaccine for COVID-19 yet and CDC in Namibia has directed its attention and efforts towards the virus by working together with the Ministry of Health. Nangombe confirmed COVID-19 cases still stand at 16. Eleven are in the Khomas Region, four in Erongo and one in the /Kharas Region. Nangombe and Dziuban spoke during a panel discussion on myths and misinformation at the COVID-19 Communication Centre today.
