Two vessels have collided at sea, just north-east of Pelican Peninsula in the Walvis Bay port. The Namibian Ports Authority – Namport – reported the collision on Tuesday, saying no-one was injured in the accident that happened two-days ago. Its Executive for Port Operations, Raymond Visagie, says the incident involved a Namibian-registered fishing vessel, Muxia, and reefer vessel, Nova Caledonia. A reefer ship is a refrigerated cargo ship, used to transport perishable goods. Visagie explains that the Muxia made contact with the hall of the Nova Caledonia, but both vessels remained in stable seaworthy condition. Nova Caledonia is registered in Saint Kitts and Nevis, a dual-island situated between the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. Visagie says both vessels returned to the port immediately after the accident and that the circumstances that led to the collision will only be known once official investigations are completed. The NamPort official notes that the Muxia was on her way from the fishing ground to the Merlus seafood factory at Walvis Bay. Visagie said the Nova Caledonia was proceeding to transfer fish from another fishing vessel. He says both vessels will only return to sea once repairs on them have been completed.
