The Secretary-General of the National Union of Namibian Workers (NUNW), Job Muniaro says COVID-19 has destroyed the economy of Namibia. Muniaro says jobs have been lost, small and medium enterprises and operations from various factories have been affected. Therefore, it will be difficult for the economy to recover from this pandemic. Secretary-General of the Namibia Employer’s Federation (NEF), Daan Strauss says tourism and the hospitality sector are the most hard hit by the pandemic. Strauss, therefore, calls for social dialogue to discuss the impact of the virus. He said, “more danger is yet to come”, in regard to the pandemic. Strauss said it is time for all of us to make sacrifices. “It will never be business as usual. Company structures will have to change and there will be a need for new skills,” he said. Trade Union Congress of Namibia (TUCNA), Mahongora Kavihuha said it is not true that the virus caught us unprepared and that Government and businesses have been warned about social protections. Kavihuha said the Social Security Commission (SSC) should have put up an unemployment insurance fund, to cover those who have lost their jobs. He highlighted that the health of employees overrides the importance of economic growth, especially now. Kavihuha appealed to the health ministry to listen to nurses through their labour representatives to address their plight during the pandemic. He concludes that the crisis should not be made a scapegoat for companies to lay off workers without following procedures. The trio were discussing the state of the labour sector at the COVID-19 Communication Centre.
