US President Donald Trump has announced that the United States will withdraw from the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) and cease funding the United Nations Relief and Works Agency.

The announcement is published on the official White House website.

Trump’s executive order mandates the termination of the office of the U.S. Representative to the UNHRC and any associated support positions.

Additionally, it calls for a comprehensive review of U.S. membership in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), focusing on evaluating the organisation’s alignment with American interests and examining any instances of anti-Semitism or anti-Israel sentiment.

In Namibia, the UNHRC offers technical assistance to promote and protect human rights, focusing on areas such as safeguarding civic space, preventing human rights violations, addressing gender-based violence, and integrating human rights into development initiatives.

President Trump’s administration has also ordered the closure of USAID globally, a move that could see multitudes without jobs and leave many without much-needed life-saving medications.

USAID has been instructed to close operations on Friday.

The US embassy in Namibia is yet to respond
