Vice President Nickey Iyambo has called for financial support towards the Omukwetu newspaper of the ELCIN church. Dr Iyambo says the newspaper played a crucial role in helping Namibians with advocacy for self-determination, peace and justice during the struggle for independence. He added that in the 1960s, Omukwetu played a significant role as a mass-communication vehicle that published encouraging and informative articles about the status of the war in areas where the church was operational. He was speaking at the anniversary celebrations of the founding of the newspaper, in Windhoek on Saturday. The newspaper is one of the oldest in the country, founded in 1901 under the auspices of the Finish Evangelical Lutheran Mission and later the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Namibia (ELCIN). It is currently under financial difficulties and the Church is using the anniversary to raise funds. Vice President Iyambo donated ten thousand dollars towards the fund.
