The two main political parties in Zimbabwe, ruling ZANU PF and the MDC Alliance are holding their final rallies Saturday afternoon in Harare. Twenty three candidates are contesting for the country’s general election which will decide on a new president and representatives of both houses. Incumbent president Emmerson Mnangagwa is the ZANU PF candidate while Nelson Chamisa will contest for the presidency on the MDC Alliance ticket. Although the MDC Alliance has cried fowl and accused the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission of bias towards ZANU PF, most observers have described the period leading up to the elections as free and fair. A key difference in this year’s election is the big number of international observers in the country. President Mnangagwa says the fact that 23 candidates are competing for the presidency and were able to freely campaign is evident of the democratic growth the country has seen in the last seven months.
